Ancestor-Red River Series

The process for this woodcut includes transferring the profile of my great Great Grandmother Nancy Ann Gladu, from a small photograph. The distant tones, grey green and red, are printed from one block, then the key block is registered and printed over top.

I portray her in this piece essentially as a silhouette, as if she is having a 'portrait' taken in her Red River environment. She is flanked by a Metis sash in red below, stylized indigenous flowers and a bison. in a way, it is a dual portrait.

key block color block and first colors. Red sash has been cut out, inked and reassembled. final print, Ancestor, Red River Series.
