From my recent Red River series tracing my ancestors in a visual narrative from Winnipeg to North Dakota. The Dease/Martineau log house, still standing, is located at an historically strategic location along the Red River Oxcart Trail outside of Leroy, North Dakota. The home was built in 1868 by A. Morin, a Métis carpenter. Known as The Rendezvous of Pioneers,” this house, built by my great uncle, John Warren Dease Jr, was a well-known gathering place for many, and a stop for Metis traders, hunters and rebellion fighters, including Riel and others instrumental in the establishing of Metis rights...and ultimately,  the formation of the province of Manitoba.
